Lisbon Restaurants
Portugal is proud of its gastronomy. Lisbon restaurants point the habit of the locals to eat and drink well. Most Lisbon restaurants have on the menu codfish, pork, goat, partridge, quail or rabbit, which are typical meats in Portugal.
Dishes
The traditional starter in Lisbon restaurants is soup: caldo verde ("Green Soup"), canja (chicken and rice soup), sopa da pedra ("Stone Soup", a very rich soup made of almost any vegetable or meat) or sopa portuguesa ("Portuguese soup", with kale, beans, broccoli, carrots and turnips).
The main dishes in Lisbon restaurants are usually made from Bacalhau (cod) and rice. In Lisbon restaurants there are 365 ways to prepare cod: pastéis de Bacalhau (Cod and potato croquettes), Bacalhau cozido (cod stew), Bacalhau assado (roast cod) or Bacalhau à brás (typical for Lisbon restaurants, made from cod, onions and slices of potato, black olives, scrambled eggs and parsley). But the greatest way to prepare codfish is probably Bacalhau as Natas, with bechamel sauce, potatoes and gratin cheese.
Drinks
Served in small shots the very strong coffee is a well known habit in Lisbon restaurants. People tend to drink coffee in cafés and Lisbon restaurants rather than at home.
Portugal is a big wine producer and Lisbon restaurants include in their offers Portuguese specialties like: Vinho Verde (“Green Wine”, a young wine with low alcohol), wines from the Dão valley, similar to Burgundy, from Bairrada, the traditional wine-growing region and so on. The famous wine of Porto, sweet and syrupy, red or white is also drunk in Lisbon restaurants as an aperitif or after a meal.
