Lisbon Flag
The Lisbon flag is represented by a gironny of eight, black over white, usually with the coat of arms in the middle.
On the Lisbon flag there are few distinctive elements, like the ravens and the ship which remind of Saint Vincent’s legend.
On a wavy sea there is a sail ship sable with a rudder, a mast and its ropes, all lined argent. The ship has a flag and sails, furled in five “pockets”. In both parts of the ship there are two ravens sable lined argent, pointing to the center of the shield, ravens that once took care of Saint Vincent's coffin.
Above this scene in Lisbon flag there is a mural crown created through five apparent towers that show Lisbon’s rank. This rank is also present at the collar of the Order of Tower and Sword in yellow and green colors. A white scroll with the motto "MUI NOBRE E SEMPRE LEAL CIDADE DE LISBOA", meaning “Most noble and always loyal city of Lisbon” is almost embracing the entire scene.
The Lisbon flag is commonly seen throughout the city, sometimes with these very complex arms in the centre, and always fluttering along with the Portuguese flag. |
