Lisbon Fado
Fado is the Lisbon song. An expression of Portuguese soul, Lisbon fado refers to fate, from the latin word "fatum".
A melancholic song, Lisbon fado has still mysterious origins. It is said that Lisbon fado has its roots in the 19th century ballads, which are linked with the times when Arabs and Greeks passed through Portugal bringing their music and songs. There is also the theory of African slave songs as the beginning of Lisbon fado. And there is the theory of the Brasilian influence, Lisbon fado having an equivalent in Brazilian "Choro".
Lisbon fado has intensified the feeling of "saudade", a Portuguese word hard to translate referring to the feeling of missing someone and wanting to see that person as soon as possible. The English words "yearning" and "longing" are close as a meaning for “saudade”. The lyrical content of Lisbon fado is based usually on a story, a poem or on the slices of reality.
Even if Lisbon fado talks about pain, passion or lost love, it is not a sad song. Lisbon Fado asks for an intense performance made from the bottom of the soul. Usually Guitarra Portuguesa and Violas are accompanying the “fadista” (Lisbon fado singer). Some of the most famous Lisbon fado singers are Amália Rodrigues and Alfredo Marceneiro.
Some of Lisbon fado well known songs are: O fado da Severa, Avé Maria fadista (Amália Rodrigues), Povo que lavas no rio (Amália Rodrigues), A casa da Mariquinhas (Alfredo Marceneiro), A moda das tranças pretas (Vicente da Câmara), Que Deus me perdoe (Amália Rodrigues), Desejo canalha (Alfredo Marceneiro).
Today there are Lisbon fado houses offering, besides meals, live Lisbon fado, played by professional artists. Here are some restaurants where live Lisbon fado can be listened.
